SPÂN, -Ă, spâni, -e, adj. Căruia nu-i creşte (aproape) deloc barbă şi mustaţă. Faţă spână. Om spân. ♢ (Substantivat, m.) Spânul vrea sa-ţi răpuie capul (CREANGĂ). – lat. *spanus (< gr.).

spîn (-ni), adj. m. – Glabru, fără păr. – Mr. spîn. gr. σπάνος, de la στάνυς "lipsă de densitate" (Densusianu, Hlr., 345; Philippide, II, 14 şi 733; Bezdechi, Dacor., IV, 1282; REW 8118b; Rohlfs, EWUG, 2012; Rosetti, II, 68; Sandfeld 29), cf. alb. spënk, sl. spanŭ. Prezenţa unui intermediar lat. *spanus nu pare o ipoteză posibilă şi nici necesară (calabr., sicil. spanu este împrumut direct din gr.). Der. din sl. este posibilă, dar se loveşte de dificultatea trecerii lui anîn, care este aceeaşi din cuvintele mult discutate, jupîn, smîntînă, stînă şi stăpîn. – Der. spînatic (var. spînatec), adj. (glabru).
