CAFTÁN, caftane, s.n. (înv.) Manta orientală, albă, lungă şi largă, împodobită cu fire de aur sau de mătase, pe care o purtau domnitorii şi boierii români. ♢ expr. A îmbrăca (cu sau în) caftan = a (se) ridica la rangul de domn sau de boier. ♦ Simbol al rangului de boier. – Din tc. kaftan.

caftán (caftáne), s.n. – 1. Manta de gală. Caftanul fastuos, din stofă albă ţesută cu fir galben, cu blană la mîneci şi la gît, era un cadou oficial de învestitură, pe care sultanul obişnuia să-l facă marelui vizir, domnitorilor din Moldova, Muntenia şi Transilvania şi hanului Crimeei. La rîndul lor, domnitorii dăruiau un caftan de altă culoare fiecărei persoane pe care o numeau în funcţii publice, astfel încît noţiunea de caftan a ajuns să se confunde cu cea de numire sau acordare de titlu. – 2. Îndeletnicire sau funcţie al cărei semn distinctiv era caftanul. – 3. Manta, mai ales aceea pe care o foloseau evreii moldoveni. – 4.
