PROFÚND, -Ă, profunzi, -de, adj. 1. (Despre oameni) Înzestrat cu o mare putere de pătrundere, de înţelegere; care analizează temeinic lucrurile; pătrunzător, perspicace; (despre înţelegerea, despre gândurile, judecăţile, creaţiile etc. omului) care dovedeşte profunzime, seriozitate, inteligenţă. 2. (Despre însuşiri morale, despre stări fiziologice sau psihice etc.) Puternic, intens, mare. ♦ (Despre salut, reverenţe etc.) Care se face înclinând foarte mult capul, corpul; p. ext. care exprimă respect, consideraţie. 3. (Despre ochi, privire) Care exprimă, care sugerează însuşiri morale deosebite, profunzime, sentimente adânci. 4. (Despre voce, sunete etc.) Cu ton jos; grav, adânc. 5. (Despre procese fizice, sociale, morale etc.) Fundamental, esenţial, radical. 6. (Despre ape, cavităţi, săpături, obiecte concave etc.) Al cărui fund este situat la o distanţă (foarte) mare faţă de marginea de sus, de suprafaţă; adânc. – Din lat. profundus, fr. profond.
