De forma unui cerc, a unei sfere, a unui disc. ♦ (Despre dealuri, coline etc.) Cu creasta fără muchii sau colţuri. ♦ (mat.; despre o curbă plană sau despre o suprafaţă) Care are toate punctele la aceeaşi distanţă de un punct dat; în formă de cerc. 2. (Despre fiinţe sau părţi ale corpului lor) Împlinit, grăsuţ, durduliu, rotofei. 3. (Despre cifre, sume, cantităţi) Fără fracţiuni sau subdiviziuni; întreg, complet. 4. Încheiat2 (II). II. s.n. Figură, suprafaţă în formă de disc sau de cerc. [var.: (înv. şi reg.) rătúnd, -ă adj.] – lat. retundus (= rotundus).

rotúnd (rotúndă), adj. – în formă de cerc. – var. rătund. lat. rŏtŭndus, cf. it. rotondo, tondo, sard. tundu. var. retŭndus care se propune în general pentru rom. (Densusianu, Hlr., 92, 94; Puşcariu 1451; Tiktin; REW 73; Candrea), nu este necesară pentru a explica rezultatul rom., rătund, cf. forasfără, locustalăcustă, etc. Forma rotund nu este un hipercultism, cum insinuează Tiktin şi Scriban, ci pare rezultatul final al evoluţiei lui ră- în Munt., cf. palumbusporumb, răcodelierocodelii, răpotiniropotini, etc. Rătund nu se aude în Munt., din păcate, acest cuvînt nu figurează în ALR. Der. rotunji (var. rătunji, înv. rătunzi), vb. (a face rotund); rotunjime (var. rătunzime), s.f. (calitatea de a fi rotund); rotunjitură, s.f. (rotunjime); rotunjor, s.m. (monedă, ban); rotunjoară, s.f. (plantă, Homogyne alpina).
